The research project Virtual Society – beyond mobility, and the research programme Man – Medium – Machine at Södertörn university college, Campus Haninge, Stockholm, invites to the two-day conference “The Virtual – a room without borders?” 15th-16 September 2005.

theme of conference

What is this phenomena that we call the virtual? What are its characteristics? For the humans, the virtual is not primarily an advanced and new technology. Rather, it is first and foremost just another dimension of the reality we are living in. But what are the characteristics of this dimension of the reality? How do we understand, and appropriate, the affordances of the virtual?

During the conference, the research project Virtual Society will present findings from the (first) three years of the project. We will also present the anthology, current in progress, where a range of empirical studies within the realm of the research project are discussed.

During the two days there will be three keynote speakers. There will also be two parallel sessions each day with 3-4 short paper-presentations with relevance on the four sub-themes of the conference. Each sub-theme will be introduced by a presentation from an invited moderator. The conference will close with a panel debate. For more details, see the programme.

abstracts and papers

As noted above, the idea is that the conference will be centred around four different sub-themes based on papers submitted by participants attending a selected theme. These thematic discussions will be moderated by a specially invited moderator and the accepted papers will be distributed beforehand to participants.

Papers will be accepted on the basis of submitted abstracts or short papers not more than a page that highlights the main issues that will be developed in the forthcoming paper that we hope to receive not later than August 15th. This paper shouldn’t exceed 8 pages (c.a 6.000 words) so that the conference documentation can be of reasonable length. The paper will be sent to all participants prior to the conference. The final paper should be formatted with this template (right-click and save the template to your local machine).
